Argon-Haus, administration building
Stuttgart, Germany
The office and administration building is located in Hauptstätterstraße, a six-
lane road which as one of the major roads in Stuttgart represents an
important urban-development break. Cantilevering of the upper storeys
allowed at least a partial narrowing of the not-to-scale road space and the
creation of a covered pedestrian area which was extended to provide
spacious access to an underground station and a road underpass.

The building closes a gap between existing buildings of different height and
thus protects the residential quarter behind against street noise. The
combination of living and working was particularly accentuated by the
specific design of the inner courtyards (as public playground, for instance)
and the provision of additional parking space for residents. The building is
used by two ministries of the Land of Baden-Württemberg.
